GEOGRAPHY NEWS - March / April 2017

Revision

With Easter now here, we are well into the Revision season and many students have already been attending the GCSE afterschool revision sessions and A’level revision is already underway in class. Our revision programmes continue after Easter and in the build up to the exams we encourage students to make use of our revision guides and online resources and see their teachers with any questions they have. Practice past papers are available for all students and we would encourage students to attempt extra questions in the run up to the exams. For our GCSE students they also have access to many revision resources via our dedicated GCSE blog www.geobytesgcse.wordpress.com including interactive past questions, podcasts, downloadable revision cards etc.

Schoology

In preparation for the exam season, our Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 GCSE and A level Geography courses are now all available online as full courses on Schoology (www.schoology.com), with powerpoints, video clips, links and supporting resources. We hope this proves useful as another way for students to access

resources for revision, as well as for students to ensure that all notes are up-to-date. Revision resources are also being added and updates are frequently sent out to help students remember key points / flag up links and resources that might be useful. Students can also ask questions through the online discussion forums. Students in Years 10-13 can get the relevant access codes to join their courses

from their teachers.

Snowdonia Fieldtrip

Year 12 students have recently returned from a four day residential in Snowdonia. Fieldwork is an important, and indeed integral part of the A level Geography course and the Snowdon area provides the perfect opportunity for students to

investigate both physical and human geography concepts. Students developed confidence in their fieldwork enquiry skills and fieldwork techniques in preparation for their independent enquiries. This involved coastal fieldwork

undertaken at Llandudno and changing perceptions of place in the ex-mining towns of Blaenau Ffestiniog and Llanberis. Students also visited the spectacular Nant Ffrancon and Cwm Idwal to revise and consolidate their understanding of glaciation and the impact of glaciers on the landscapes ready for their exam in

May. The students had a great time and were a credit to themselves and the school.

The Geography Department wishes everyone a Happy Easter Bank Holiday.
